She was criticized for her weight during her modeling days, but now that she's a TV talk-show and reality-show host, she's one of the most highly regarded figures in American media.

Tyra Banks is here to stay.

Invited by the New York Times to their building on 8th Ave., Tyra Banks held a news conference earlier this week before an eclectic crowd. At the risk of sounding superficial, Banks looks a lot thinner in person than she does on TV. Wearing beige from head to toe and her hair impeccable in spite of the rain, Banks appears to be a woman in complete control of herself. This is, after all, a person who swears she's never had a drop of alcohol in her life.

Few of the top models in the 1990s succeeded in their "post-careers," especially in anything media-related. Most took a crack at exercise videos, perfumes and anti-wrinkle creams. But not Tyra Banks.

"I'm not for sale," she told her audience. "I want young people to trust me when I speak to them, so I can't put my face on products."

Banks talked about the flash of inspiration she had after seeing Cindy "The Mole" Crawford for the first time.

"She was in control, she had power, and there were people all around her. That's what I wanted," she said.
Banks is the host of two hit shows, the talk show she's had on CBS since 2005 and the ongoing America's Next Top Model series she established, now in its 12th season.

"No one believed in the project at the start because models have a reputation for being unlikeable."

The reality show is now broadcast in 40 countries around the world.

Banks is involved in many other side projects, including producing films and TV shows for children. The secret to her success , she says, is that she knows how to talk to young people.

"I still feel like a teenager," Banks said. "It was the most uncertain time of my life, so I know how to approach them."

Her most devoted audience is women ages 18 to 34 -- every marketer's dream. It was no surprise to see all the U.S. presidential candidates, with the exception of John McCain, make an appearance on her show. She was the first to land Barack Obama as a guest. "I was never so nervous in my whole life," said Banks, never one to shy away from a tough question. Her most famous interview was with Hillary Clinton, in which she persuaded her guest to speak candidly about her husband's adultery.

Nor does Banks hesitate to discuss image and good looks with her guests. She's on a crusade.

"If I get up in the morning it's because I have a mission to redefine the standards of beauty in the United States," she said.

The 35-year-old media phenomenon is trying to lead a beauty revolution and not only on weight issues. She makes sure that girls with dark skin make it to America's Next Top Model. The next season will feature 5-foot-7 inch girls.

"I know what's it's like to not fit the mould," she said. At age 13, she was already 5-foot-9 and weighed 98 pounds. "I looked like an African antelope with eyes set far apart. I was weird, people would give me looks."

She became a model at age 17. Her body began to develop a few years later and her modelling agency gave her a list of designers who refused to work with her unless she lost some weight.
She decided to not take it sitting down.

"I simply decided to become more commercial and distance myself from haute couture," she explained, something no black model had done before.

Tyra Banks was about to prove the saying "shut up and be pretty" was a thing of the past.
